EPUB Adaptive Layout Specification Becomes IDPF Informational Document

September 13, 2012
On September 6, 2012 the IDPF Board of Directors unanimously approved elevation of EPUB Adaptive Layout to be an IDPF Informational Document. This specification defines a model for template-based adaptive paginated layouts as an extension to CSS. The features described in the EPUB Adaptive Layout specification allow authors to describe precise page appearances that can intelligently adapt to a wide range of device sizes and custom user settings. This specification was produced by the IDPF Advanced Adaptive Layout Working Group, with editors Peter Sorotokin (Adobe Systems), Brady Duga (Google), Garth Conboy (Google), and Markus Gylling (IDPF/DAISY). Content using EPUB Adaptive Layout syntax can already be generated by at least one commercial product, Adobe InDesign CS6 (via its "EPUB 3 with Layout" export option).

The Advance Adaptive Layout working group charter remains in effect and while there will be a hiatus in activity, additional work may be undertaken in the future including work on errata/updates as it becomes clear how EPUB Adaptive Layout is being used in solutions and what steps should be taken to maximize alignment with related CSS modules in development at W3C.
