IDPF Board candidate: Mike Baker, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

May 31, 2016
I wish for my nomination to be considered for a position on the IDPF Board of Directors.

I have been working in the Ed Tech space for over 8 years, and as Technical Director of Content Strategy at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I lead HMH’s strategy in the area of standards.  I work continuously to adopt open web and publishing standards collaborating with cross-functional teams across HMH to use a standards based approach to developing our K-12, Consumer, and Trade Publications and Media. In recent years, HMH has moved from a number of proprietary reading systems and content formats to EPUB3. We now develop content that delivers the optimal user experience irrespective of the user’s chosen device or platform (for example, HMH’s reading system, Readium, or and other 3rd party EPUB readers).

At HMH we continue to be early adopters of technology and standards’ specifications.  We design and develop high volume, variety of digital content, working with fixed layout, reflowable and multi-rendition formats.  We also implement media overlays, widget packaging, distributable objects, open annotations, etc.  We are also working on our rollout of EPUB for Education. I’m excited about being part of the Board of Directors in evolving EPUB in particular for the K-12 market.  In my work at HMH, I also contribute and support IMS Global Standards, including Common Cartridge, QTI, LTI, and Caliper analytics; all of which I believe gives me a unique perspective and a breadth and depth of industry knowledge and understanding that will greatly benefit IDPF.

Where open standards continue to innovate in areas of trade and educational content, I believe we are at a point where we can provide engaging, enriching, and innovative content solutions that are available to all in terms of interoperability and accessibility.  I am excited about contributing to and evolving EPUB as the interoperable publishing standard supported by eReaders and in browser friendly formats.  This is an opportune time as the IDPF considers the benefits of joining forces with W3C  and I would appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate this by being part of the IDPF Directors team.

Thank you,
