Redirection in an epub

Forums:

IDPF/EPUB General

I realize each epub reader interprets code individually, so one answer to one may not work to another.
But, I realize, if epub is html, i should be able to make it where readers can be guided where to go.
I know the javascript techniques using location or window open but before I try it later any suggestions on how to do it from some whom have already is welcome. An epub is technically supposed to be in its own environment. I know that javascript by default allows a breakage to that environment and thus why many ereaders dont allow for this or the other. But, I don't see why doing an internal action should be rejected.
I will try later to get a page in my test epub to read what page I came from and accept me or take me to another page based on the reading. thanks again

I am trying to validate an ePub....I have been able to solve 2 out of the 3 errors (thanks to reading posts on the forum) but the 3rd is driving me crazy.

This is what it is telling me:

ERROR OEBPS/toc.ncx 18 46 Referenced resource could not be found in the EPUB.

Now I can't find the file that is referenced in the line anywhere....and when I try to remove the reference I get a whole new error.

Can someone help please?

Thank you!

Allie

Just to add on...this is the line. Also I am using Sigil:

<navPoint id="navPoint-1" playOrder="1">
<navLabel>
<text>Start</text>
</navLabel>
<content src="Text/Section0001.xhtml"/>
</navPoint>

Is "Text/Section0001.html" the same as page 1 or would that be the toc.xhtml?

Page Numbers for Kindle eBooks

Forums:

IDPF/EPUB General

I apologize if this is in the wrong area. We are a smaller publisher and have been having eBooks for the Kindle format made for us by vendors. About five years or so ago when it appeared that actual page numbers would be available in the Kindle format we determined at that time that it was cost prohibitive. However, we are wanting now to revisit this issue with the advances made since that time with Kindle 3 devices, etc. and particularly with the roll-out of page flip functionality by Amazon.

Is it still the case that taking advantage of real page number in our eBook/Kindle files represents a significantly higher cost?

I hope I'm making sense here and thanks for responses/input.

Work Flow Questions

Forums:

IDPF/EPUB General

Sorry for the long-winded question, but any comments would be helpful. If anyone can point me to another discussion or article that answers my questions, that would be a big help, too.

Anyway, I started out working with InDesign, but I found the learning curve pretty steep, plus I'm still amazed that you can't work directly with HTML. So I switched to Sigil, which I love, except that you can't put subfolders in the Images folder, which is why I'm going to check out Calibre. I also need to learn how to work with iBooks Author, as I hope to create versions for both Amazon and iBooks.

I also want to learn how to make fixed layouts; I've only made reflowable epubs so far.

So here's my question: What would be a good work flow if I want to create four versions of an epub, as follows:

1. Amazon Kindle (reflowable)
2. Amazon Kindle (fixed)
3. iBooks (reflowable)
4. iBooks (fixed)

Is it easier to create a reflowable epub, then convert it to a fixed layout, or vice versa?

Is it easier to create a Kindle version, then convert it to an iBooks format, or vice versa?

I think I read somewhere that you can import an epub into iBooks, then convert it to Apple's format. I haven't yet learned if you can do the opposite - import an epub made with iBooks into InDesign, Sigil, etc.

I have another question regarding fixed layouts. InDesign effectively bars you from the HTML. It also creates a lot of code bloat. I'm not sure if the same is true of iBooks Author or not. If iBooks gives you access to the HTML, then I'd be tempted to create a fixed layout in iBooks first, then somehow convert it to an Amazon Kindle version.

Another possibility I've considered is designing my layout in Dreamweaver, previewing it as a web page, then importing my HTML into Sigil or Calibre. Have any of you ever done this?

Thanks for any tips!
