IDPF Seminar on eBook Design at Frankfurt

July 31, 2013

IDPF, in partnership with Frankfurt Academy, will present a seminar at Frankfurt Book Fair. What Makes an E-Book Beautiful? will take place October 10, 2013 from 9:30am to 12:30pm. Speakers include Luc Audrain, head of digitalization of Hachette-Livre, Liisa McCloy-Kelley, VP and Director of eBook Development and Innovation at Random House, Samuel Petit, co-founder of ActiaLuna, and Markus Gylling, CTO of IDPF and DAISY Consortium.

The seminar will begin with an overview from Luc of the principles and practicalities of design and typography in all kinds of digital books, ranging from novels to highly designed illustrated titles, with a focus on how to implement scalable workflows. In the second part of the workshop Liisa will focus on applying interactive design best practices to the development of specifically digital-enhanced content. This talk will showcase real-word examples of good and bad design elements and cover best practices for digital-specific (rather than print-conversion-oriented) design and enhancements for cooking, how-to, children's and other high-design segments of eBooks. In the third session  Samuel will cover the latest developments in digital comics and e-manga. This market segment is a growing market and success story for highly designed digital content, and has implications both for print publishers of comics as well as publishers of other types of highly-designed illustrated titles. Markus will conclude with an overview of the roadmap for how EPUB 3 and HTML5 are evolving to better meet the needs of digital publishers for representing high-design content and interactivity, including new EPUB and CSS capabilitie. Open source and commercial tools will also be demonstrated including initiatives of the new Readium Foundation as well as other projects.
