Candidate Statement - Paul Belfanti

Please consider my application as a candidate for the IDPF Board of Directors. I believe that my experience as Director of Content Architecture for Pearson North America’s Content Management Services and my work as an evangelist for open standards adoption across Pearson and the educational publishing industry makes me well suited to this role.
I am passionate about the power of standards like EPUB 3 to be the foundation of product and service innovation that will transform the publishing landscape and enrich end – user experiences for years to come.
Key staff from my Content Architecture team were active members of the EPUB 3 Working Group and we continue to engage in the development of this essential standard.
As co-program chair (with Markus Gylling) of the EDUPUB Workshop in Boston this past October, hosted by Pearson, I’ve been instrumental in advancing adoption of Open Web Standards such as HTML5, EPUB 3, QTI/LTI, LRMI, WAI-ARIA  etc., and Pearson has contributed the EDUPUB output profile (created by my team) for consideration as a standard output specification for educational content. In my role as Open Standards evangelist I have presented on the value of industry standards based workflows across the global Pearson landscape and in public forums such as Digital Book 2013, Publishing Business Conference & Expo 2013, and the EDUPUB Workshop.
A recent interview in Book Business Magazine gives a good overview of my perspective and activity in this area: Opening Up: Pearson's Paul Belfanti speaks about the benefits of greater collaboration around open standards in the educational publishing industry, and the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital revolution.
I believe I would be an asset to the IDPF board of directors and would be honored to serve as such.
