Advanced Adaptive Layout Workshop Notes

July 26, 2011

On July 20, 2011 the IDPF held a workshop on Advanced Adaptive Layout for High-Design Publications, in Mountain View, CA USA and via Web conference. Total attendance was over 60 (over 30 in person)  from over 25 different organizations including Adobe, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Cengage Learning, Google, IDEAlliance, Inkling, John Wiley, Libre Digital, Pearson, Rodale, Safari Books Online, and others.

The workshop was run by Markus Gylling (CTO Daisy Consortium & Chair, EPUB 3 Working Group) and included several presentations including an overview of EPUB 3 capabilities for rich layout (Garth Conboy), survey of in-progress CSS work (Tab Atkins & Elika Etemad), and elements of adaptive page layout (Peter Sorotokin). Active discussion led to several attendees agreeing to participate in an ad hoc group to draft a charter for a Working Group to focus in this area, with Markus Gylling volunteering to coordinate. Interested parties should monitor the associated wiki page . Discussion also touched on related issues in representing fixed-layout content in EPUB, and interest was expressed in another workshop to discuss best practices and potential need for additional mechanisms to support use cases for manga and other inherently fixed-format (pre-paginated) content. The IDPF intends to schedule such a workshop in the near future and will aim to appropriately coordinate adaptive-layout and fixed-format activities.
