Understanding EPUB 3 Webinar series starts Tues, Feb. 21

There's still time to register for a special Book Industry Study Group (BISG) and Digital Book World (DBW) 4-part Webcast Series focusing on EPUB 3.0. IDPF Executive Director Bill McCoy and EPUB 3 WG Metadata subgroup lead Bill Kasdorf will kick off the series on Tuesday, February 21 (1pm ET). Other presenters will include key IDPF members and WG participants from Kaplan, Metrodigi, and eBook Architects.

IDPF Unveils Program, Speakers for Digital Book 2012 at BEA

New York, NY, April 10, 2012 – The International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) announced today the preliminary program and speakers for Digital Book 2012 at BEA (idpf.org/db12). The conference, held in partnership with BookExpo America (BEA), will be held June 4-5, 2012, in New York City’s Javits Center, and is expected to draw global leaders in the publishing industry, including technologists, marketers, retailers, solution providers, publishers, authors, and agents.

 

Accessible EPUB 3 book now available at O'Reilly website

In collaboration with DAISY and IDPF, O'Reilly has now published Accessible EPUB 3 - Best Practices for Creating Universally Usable Content. This is the second installment of the forthcoming EPUB 3 Best Practices book.

IDPF announces EPUB samples project

IDPF today announces the open source epub-samples project. This EPUB sample document repository is intended to showcase features of the EPUB 3 standard, and to provide evaluation and testing materials for Reading System developers. 

The sample collection is being built and shared collaboratively by contributors from the EPUB community — read more about how to contribute at the project's Contributing page.

Dictionary, Indexes Working Groups Formed

IDPF member organizations have approved charters for working groups to add dictionaries and indexes support to EPUB. The consent vote for dictionaries WG was 68 in favor, 1 against, and 1 abstention. The consent vote for indexes WG was 69 in favor, 1 against, and 1 abstention.

Progress on Common Approach to EPUB 3 Fixed-Layout Metadata

The ad-hoc group working on fixed-layout metadata held an all-day meeting on Jan. 12, hosted by Sony in San Jose, CA, with representatives from Apple, Adobe, Barnes&Noble, Google, Hachette Book Group / AAP, and Sony. Consensus was reached on a unified framework for representing fixed-layout metadata in EPUB 3.

Voting Underway for Dictionaries, Indexes WGs

Member consent voting is open through Jan. 29 for working group charter proposals to add dictionaries and indexes support to EPUB, following member comment periods during December, 2011 and subsequent approval of both draft charters by the IDPF Board of DIrectors.
